Edward Peed

Firefighter Edward Peed, age 46, of the Salamander Fire Company, died in a wall collapse during a fire at the Atlantic Coast Line Freight Warehouse on February 8, 1902.

His death marked the first recorded firefighter line-of-duty death in the State of North Carolina.

In addition to being a firefighter for the Salamander Fire Company, he served as its treasurer. Edward also served on the Washington City Council from 1883-1889.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
