Emory Clyde Pauley

Firefighter Emory Clyde Pauley, age 51, of the Charleston Fire Department, died on March 4, 1949, when the floor collapsed during a fire at the Woolworth’s Department Store.

He served at Charleston Fire Department’s Central station for 24 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dessie Hunt Pauley; his three sons, Eugene Emory, William Daniel and Fred Robert Pauley; his two sisters, Mrs. William Moles and Mrs. Charles Moles; his two brothers, Everett and Virgil Pauley .

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
