Ernest Nelson “Ernie” Cash was born to Ernest A. Cash (father) and Earle Loving Cash (mother) on March 10, 1950, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Chief Cash began his fire department journey in 1971. This service to his community via the fire department evolved into his love, passion, and desire to assist those in need and save lives. He rose through the ranks, including serving as fire chief for over 20 years. Even upon his retirement as fire chief, Chief Cash continued his service to Amherst County and the department in many ways and served as a fire instructor.
Ernie developed a true passion for instructing, especially the new fresh recruits. He often shared his fire department journey, which included his firefighting experiences in Washington, DC in the 1970s, and his assignment with CAL Fire, Hollister Air Attack Base, for three years in the mid-2000s. The many awards and recognitions Ernie received made him proud, but he remained humble. He earned his fire science degree from Central Virginia Community College and completed a great deal of training throughout his active-duty fire service years.
Ernie’s love for cars and motorcycles was evidenced throughout his life, as he rebuilt his 1978 Broncos, Ford pickup trucks, and built his own bike. Later in life, Ernie and his wife, Tina, would ride Harleys, kayak the James River, and ride bicycles trails.
Ernie was employed for 30 years as a conveyor builder and installer.
Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Tina Cash; his children, Anthony (Jessica) and Jennifer (Darryl); his grandchildren, Kaleb, KK, and DJ; his brother, JT; in-laws, Bettie, Ronnie, Deborah, Ken, and Sandy; and a host of friends and firefighters.
