Gary Clark Campbell, 52, was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, to the late Clinton Byrd Campbell and Mary Louise on November 18, 1969, and lived an exciting life enjoying family and friends. Gary began his career with Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management on October 5, 1992. He worked through the ranks and was a battalion chief when he was exposed to COVID on the job.
Gary led a life serving and protecting county residents in a paid and volunteer capacity as a lifetime member of the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department. In his service to county residents, he saved many lives and was a dedicated leader. He was a loving and devoted family man and dedicated friend; he was always willing to give more to others than he ever expected to receive. In his spare time, Gary, known as Hound Dog, was an avid hunter and one of the original founding members of the Flat Top Hunt Club. He was a talented carpenter, and he never passed up an opportunity to travel and see new places. In retirement, Gary was looking forward to his dove hunt in Argentina and taking a cruise with his entire family.
Gary left behind his best friend, Denise Campbell; his daughter, Victoria Moore; his sons, Seth Campbell, Gary Ryan Campbell, and Dustin Davies (wife, Laney); and his beloved grandson, Wesley Davies, who knew him as Pop Pop.
For any work that needed to be done around the firehouse or tasks that needed to be accomplished, Gary was the go-to. He built bunk beds, wooden signs, and trophy cases around many firehouses throughout the county. Gary was also the “numbers guy.” He could do any math calculation in his head, from building a deck to accomplishing pump testing on the county’s fire apparatus. He received an award from the Board of Supervisors for completing the county’s latest Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating.
Gary was great at cracking a joke and making everyone laugh. One of his favorite lines was that he was “260 pounds of romping, stomping romance, twisted steel, and sex appeal.” Of all Gary’s accomplishments, his proudest was being Pop Pop to Wesley.
He is missed dearly by his family.
