Gregory Turner VanHoose was born in Painesville, Kentucky, to Emma Jean (Daniels) VanHoose and the late James Arville VanHoose on August 18, 1962. Greg was a dedicated firefighter for more than 36 years.
He graduated from Johnson Central High School in Johnson County, Kentucky, and went on to vocational school to complete four years of autobody and welding. Greg was talented when it came to fixing small engines and painting vehicles.
He was a dedicated hard worker for the Johnson County Board of Education as a bus driver and a mechanic at the bus garage. Greg enjoyed his job and was well liked by all the people he encountered, willing to help in any way he could.
Greg loved having a good time with family and friends. He was always a prankster. His had a large garden and would plant enough for family and friends that wanted some fresh garden goods. Green beans and corn were his specialty, and we were always blessed with a lot to share. This was the kind of man he was, giving and kindhearted. He also enjoyed building rail buggies. Once he had built his first one, all the guys around started wanting one, and he would help them build theirs. Then it was weekend rides in the hills, where he loved to be.
His main thing was his family, though. He loved his mother dearly and wanted her to be taken care of. He really enjoyed seeing his grandbabies when they came in from Georgetown, Kentucky, to visit. When they stayed all night, he would get up and fix breakfast for them. To this day, his youngest, Xander, remembers when his Papaw would make his favorite, gravy and biscuits. Xander is now four years old. There is not a day that goes by that he doesn’t say something like, “I sure miss Papaw, don’t you, Nana?” We go into the living room to sit, and he wants to sit in his Papaw‘s chair. He’ll say, “I think I’ll sit here and let my Papaw hold me.” I tell him it’s fine. His Papaw would love that.
Greg and I have three beautiful grandchildren. Kylee Dawn (12), Addyson Rae (8), and Xander James (4). They were his life, and he would do anything they needed or asked to be done. That was the kind of person and Papaw he was.
I love and miss my sweet husband and my best friend. He will never be forgotten. I could go on and on and talk about this good Christian man, but I had better just stop here. Everyone that knew him knew what kind of person he was. He was willing to help anyone in need, day or night.
