On February 20, 1983, James C. Nelson was responding to an arson fire at Sterling Heights Junior High School when he fell from the open cab truck. He suffered a head injury and remained in a coma until his death on March 26, 1983.
James was survived by a wife, and 2 children.
In 1991, the City Of Sterling Heights dedicated a park in his honor, which is located on 15 Mile Road.
