Web Bordley was retired in 1973 and was directing traffic at a fire when he suffered a massive heart attack and was pronounced dead at the scene. Because he was retired, and Guttenberg, NJ had a volunteer fire department, the town’s government/insurance decided Bordley’s family was not eligible for a death benefit, resulting in a strike by the Guttenberg Volunteer Fire Department. Members of the fire department went door to door throughout the town collecting money for Bordley’s widow and daughter.
