Jeremy Lathan Compton

Jeremy Lathan Compton began his firefighting career as a volunteer firefighter with Elliston Volunteer Fire Department. In 2014, he fulfilled his dream of joining the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, where he served until his passing. He worked as a career Firefighter/EMT for the City of Radford from 2022 until 2024. Jeremy also served as a deputy with the Radford City Sheriff’s Office, where he helped develop the Crisis Intervention Team program and earned a cherished letter of commendation for his compassionate care and service.

Jeremy received numerous honors, including Firefighter of the Year from Elliston VFD (2011 & 2012); Firefighter of the Year from Radford City FD (2023); and Firefighter of the Year from Christiansburg VFD (2023). He earned the Eleanor Hawkins Award; the Never Give Up Hard Charger Hot Dog Award; and the Above and Beyond Award (2021 & 2023) from Christiansburg VFD. These accolades reflect Jeremy’s tireless dedication and the respect he earned from his peers.

Known for his humor and positivity, Jeremy often lifted others’ spirits with jokes and stories, especially those featuring his beloved alter-ego “Vinny.” His tales of “Vinny” often left family and friends laughing until they cried. One of his best friends and firefighter brothers said, “If you were having a bad day, Jeremy always seemed to turn it around and make sure you saw the brighter side of whatever may be wrong.”

Jeremy’s greatest joy was family time, especially with his son Wyatt, his “best buddy.” Their conversations, which Jeremy called “Words from Wyatt,” were filled with humor and wisdom, He cherished his role as stepfather to Mason and Cassidy, wholeheartedly supporting their games and activities. His voice of encouragement was a familiar sound at sporting events, not only for his children, but others. One young man will always remember hearing “All right 1-5, pick you out one and driiive it!”

When someone would ask how he was doing, Jeremy would answer, “Living the dream!” Jeremy preferred “see ya” rather than goodbye. He refused to let cancer define him. The Bible verse Isaiah 43:2 sustained him through difficult times. He believed that life is precious. He often said, “You have to stay strong for your family and your kids. Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. You live every day like it’s going to be your last.”

To those closest to him, Jeremy’s words, “Love you…mean it,” were more than a phrase; they were a promise. His life was a testament to courage, compassion, and unwavering love. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
