Jimmy L. Townsend, a dedicated member of the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department and a beloved figure in the Berkeley County Fire Service, passed away on September 28, 2025, at the age of 61. Born on October 17, 1963, Jimmy dedicated his life to serving his community with courage and commitment.
A graduate of Berkeley High School, Jimmy advanced into a career that became a true vocation for him. He achieved the rank of deputy fire chief, embodying the values of leadership, bravery, and compassion that are essential in the face of adversity. He responded to two emergency calls on September 27, 2025, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to helping others. Tragically, in the early morning hours of September 28, 2025, he suffered a fatal cardiac event.
Jimmy was not just a deputy fire chief; he was a rock for many. Fire Chief Scott Lee of Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department remarked on Jimmy’s impact, “Chief Townsend was a staple not only in the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department, but also throughout the entire Berkeley County Fire Service. His knowledge, experience, and professional demeanor made him the rock that so many sought during moments of chaos. He will be missed.”
Jimmy leaves behind his brother, Mike Brown; his goddaughter, Maggie Gass; and his nephews, Kevin Brown (Robin), and Chad Brown. He was preceded in death by his father, Smith Townsend, and his mother, Maggie Lynch Brown Townsend.
