Year Honored:

John G. Morrison

Battalion Chief John Morrison was best known as a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and a hot hand at the craps table. Born and raised in Spokane, Washington, John attended Gonzaga University, where he earned a degree in business administration. During those college years, he discovered both the love of his life, Jill, and his passion for firefighting and emergency medicine. John joined The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department in 1997 and spent the next 28 years serving the CDA community.

Chief Morrison was an innovator at heart. While steadfast in honoring the traditions of the fire service, he sought every opportunity to improve how firefighters operate. Over his career, he held numerous leadership roles, including program director for volunteer firefighters and public information officer, while also developing pioneering programs. He established one of the region’s first Rescue Task Force groups for active-shooter incidents, secured multiple state and federal grants, and designed scheduling and accountability software now used by fire departments across the U.S. and Canada.

Beyond his professional achievements, Chief Morrison will be remembered for his humor, intellect, and presence. He was a large man, standing six foot five. Commanding complex incidents with ease, he was the quintessential incident commander. But any time spent with John revealed a brilliant, even-tempered, and charming man. He was highly capable, and confident, whether one on one or speaking to a crowd. His charisma and clever wordsmithing drew people to him, and he spent much of his later career teaching and mentoring younger members. Whether in the station, on scene, or out in the Coeur d’Alene community, John brought a quiet confidence, laughter, and a deep commitment to service wherever he went.

While John was dedicated to his department and community, his greatest love was for his family, his wife, Jill, and their son, Joe. Together, they explored the Pacific Northwest in search of adventure, live music, and Seattle Mariners baseball games. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, drums, tennis, guitar, drawing/painting, and began writing his first novel. Quality time and sharing laughter were John’s hallmarks, and his joy for life was contagious.

Chief John Morrison’s legacy is one of laughter, loyalty, and love—for his family, his colleagues, and his community. His life’s work embodied service, innovation, and compassion. Those who had the honor to know him are better for it, and his spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who serve after him.
