Jose A. Guadalupe‚ 37‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Engine 54. Guadalupe was known as a mentor in his Jamaica‚ Queens‚ neighborhood‚ encouraging the young men he knew to study hard and improve themselves. Active as a skier‚ basketball player‚ and sketch artist‚ he himself proved to be their best role model. An avid reader in all fields from history to physics‚ he had recently begun to teach himself the guitar.

Jose, I climbed today because you climbed. I thought about you today as I climbed the steps of Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. I want to thank you for the service not only to New York, but to our country. Being only a child at the time of 9/11 and never a firefighter, I can’t imagine the things you saw that day, nor the amount of people that were in need of your help. Nonetheless, I reflected on your impact to so many. We are all so grateful for you and your efforts. Today, I climbed to honor you so we may never forget. Thank you Jose.

I remember when he was in eighth or ninth grade, when he said he was going to be a fireman…and I knew he would become one. – julio cI worked with Jose for 2 years in a fragrance company in Long Island City, Queens. I met him in 1988 and recall him telling me about the fire fighter test he had taken. He was very excited about his future plans in the FDNY.
– Richard LombardiI found Jose to be quiet and kind of shy, but once approached, he was a friendly person. I can still see him coming into to work wearing his backpack.
The company we worked for was relocating very far and I had a job offer in Florida and I left. I never knew If Jose was working with the fire dept. I never saw nor heard from Jose until I read about his death. I’m so very heartbroken and feel very sad for his wonderful family. God bless you Guad. May you Rest In Peace. Richie
Jose, today I climbed 110 floors to honor the fallen. I climbed those stairs with your picture on my helmet. Everytime I was getting fatigued I just kept repeating your name,your engine company and kept telling myself that I was climbing to honor you, and if you were still with us that you would be climbing right along side of me. I want to thank you for your service. You will never be forgotten.

You would laugh that Jewish Romanian saying has it “As long as we live, they too will live…for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.” I remember you as the kind, helpful, sensitive, artistic soul & my dear friend you were. I met tony in 1980. We went to school together. Without him, in would have NEVER passed math, Lol. He was always so intelligent. He loved to skateboard everywhere he went. He was an excellent artist as well. Tony didn’t talk to a lot of people, so if he spoke to you..you must have been special. I so miss chatting with him and seeing his smile. What a wonderfully kind and caring person he was. It’s been 17 years since he perished with so many others on that fateful day September 11, 2001. My heart is still heavy.

I also remember the day we went to Flushing Meadow Park and you told me of your fear, of that day that you would be running in to a burning building while people were running out and you not being able to help. – MariaToday I stood in a classroom full of third grade students and we explained what 911 really means. I cried as we heard the story of Sirius the rescue dog. I remember exactly where I was, watching it live on television that day. Tomorrow we will climb in your memory and all the other brave souls who died that day. The sad thing is I didn’t find out you died that day I believe a few yrs later a classmate sent me a copy of your obituary needless to say I was shock & sad. I remember I would cut class to hang out with you in the art classroom. I do remember how good you could draw. We graduated & I went into the service. I did visit you when I came home after AIT. I believe that’s the last time I saw you! Reading the memorial wall you were well loved, always helping other people. I think about you often & I know you’re missed very much. S.I.P my friend

I remember Jose and the rest of the squad but I remember him the most. As a child they would come to our building ( 352 West 46 street) and talk to the us and our parents. Many times we had to call the ambulance for my grandmother and Jose would be there making sure she was okay until the ambulance came. They were a fixture in the community. Guadalupe was my grandmothers daughters name so we would joke about that. It hit us hard because they all died that day. You made such an impression on us. RIP SIP You will forever be one of my heroes. I am now 37 and I will never forget.
