Larry E. Harlan was with the Jonesburg-High Hill Fire Protection District for 41 years. He was always proud to be a firefighter and to be able to help others in need. Larry’s passion for firefighting started in 1979 when his home burned to the ground. After this tragic event, he and his family moved to Jonesburg. At this point he vowed he would do whatever he could so this didn’t happen to someone else’s family.
Larry was proud of the awards and certificates he earned through his many years in the department, but what meant the most to him was being there for people in their hardest moments. Larry especially loved working with the new volunteers, showing them the ropes and teaching them how to run the truck.
He was very loving and devoted to his family and would go to all ends to make sure they were safe, protected, loved. He was married to his wife, Donna, for 46 years until the time of his death and has two children, Jennifer (Stewart) Bredell and William (Mandy) Harlan. Larry had a very soft spot for his five grandchildren, Dalten, Gracie, Nadine, Molly, and Charlie, as well as many honorary grandchildren.
In addition to his public service, Larry was a longtime over-the-road owner/operator truck driver. Many of his friends, family, and fellow drivers called him Grizzly. When he wasn’t working, he made time to help at the local ballpark or whatever community events needed a hand, especially at a local food pantry. Larry was a behind the scenes guy. He loved to help but was never looking for recognition.
Larry’s true passion was being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, camper—all things outdoors. He enjoyed sharing these experiences with family, friends, and even strangers he met along the way.
Larry passed away on August 26, 2021, surrounded by family who were grateful for the endless good in his heart. Larry’s impact will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the example he set.
