Leland Warren Alexander was born August 25, 1945, in Morris Chapel, Tennessee. He was the only child of Warren and Louise Alexander.
He was married to his sweetheart, Margie, for 54 years. She was his biggest supporter and forever teammate. You did not see Leland without Margie by his side. They deeply loved their daughter, Melissa Fischer, of Oakland Tennessee, her husband, Scott, and their two grandchildren, Ella and Elias.
Leland started his career at the Shelby County Penal Farm in Memphis, which later became the Shelby County Correctional Center. Leland held many roles while at the Penal Farm, including leading the escape squad and earning the position of chief of security. He later attended the Shelby County Sheriff’s Academy and eventually retired after 26 years of service in Memphis.
He moved back to Milledgeville to be close to his parents and quickly fell in love with working on the Milledgeville Volunteer Fire Department. He had a great passion to help and lead the people in his community, becoming an alderman, the mayor, and the fire chief. His days were filled with helping others, going on fire or EMS calls, and serving his community.
During the early morning of December 1, 2023, Chief Alexander had a wreck in the pumper truck while leaving a structure fire that had three people trapped. He was transferred to a trauma hospital in Memphis, where he began the long road to recovery from two broken legs, a broken arm, and a broken rib and collar bone. He worked hard trying to heal but became sick with an infection in April. He fought the infection for over three weeks, undergoing several surgeries, but died on April 27, 2024. His wife, the love of his life, died five months later from a weak heart wounded by heartbreak.
Leland will always be cherished by his family as a loving father, a doting grandfather, and a hero who gave his life while trying to help others. He is incredibly missed every day, forever deeply loved, and his legacy will not be forgotten. We are so immensely proud of him.
