Lloyd’s son-in-law‚ Keith Vinson‚ is Moulton’s Fire Chief. On the night that Lloyd died‚ the structure fire was under control. He walked up to Keith and said‚ ‘Let me squirt a little water.’ Lloyd had not been on a hose for over 6 years. He usually manned the pump on the truck. Keith gave him the hose‚ turned around to go back to his chief’s vehicle‚ and heard a loud crack. He turned and yelled‚ ‘Get back.’ He saw the wall come straight down on Lloyd and firefighter‚ Dusty Jones. Keith said it appeared that in the 1 or 2 seconds it took to die‚ Lloyd appeared to stiffen up as if he were going to try to hold up whatever hit him. He knew there was no time to run. He was a tough man with a great sense of humor. He was always telling jokes and making people smile. We don’t know why he chose to get the hose from Keith‚ or why it was only a few seconds from the time he took it until the wall fell. But‚ we do know that he will be with God throughout eternity. That’s the kind of life he lived.

Lloyd Burch Stamps McCulloch
8-11-42 to 2-21-06

Captain McCulloch was the first to respond to a commercial structure fire at approximately 1700 hours on the night of February 21‚ 2006. His excited communication to 911 indicated that he could see smoke when leaving his house. Just before 2200 hours an exterior wall collapsed on him. He and a firefighter‚ Dusty Jones‚ died instantly.

Lloyd Burch Stamps McCulloch served in the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years. He was the owner of McCulloch Furniture and Appliance Company‚ Inc. in downtown Moulton‚ located across from the Lawrence County Courthouse. On days when he was working at the store‚ he could often be seen stepping out into the intersection to hold traffic so that the ambulance‚ firetrucks‚ or police cars made their way through town. He would always say that if he was unable to be in the responding vehicle‚ he would at least help them get there.

He is survived by his wife‚ Gail Norris McCulloch‚ two daughters‚ Dr. Beth McCulloch Vinson (the fire chief’s wife) and Michelle McCulloch Manning‚ and one son‚ James Lloyd McCulloch. His grandchildren are Kelly Vinson Hyche‚ Kathryn Vinson Hand‚ James Adam Campbell‚ Chelsea Nicole Campbell‚ Briana Lee Manning‚ and Kaetlin Amelia McCulloch. He also has two great-granddaughters‚ Taylor Madison Woods and McKenzie Katherine Hyche. McKenzie had just been born the month before her great-grandfather Lloyd had died. He is also survived by his mother‚ Mildred Burch McCulloch.

Captain McCulloch was a deacon of Danville Road Church of Christ‚ Decatur‚ Alabama. He was also a developer and an active member of the Moulton Downtown Merchants Association. His hobbies included landscaping‚ cruising‚ ham radios‚ building model cars‚ and working on old fire trucks. In fact‚ it was the latter that was his passion. After he retired from the furniture and appliance business‚ he spent many days at the fire station helping his son-in-law keep the trucks in running order. Since the small department has three paid men who rotate working every third day‚ Captain McCulloch would often work a 24-hour shift when one of the men would take a day off for illness or personal business. The firefighters recall that Lloyd would complete the checklist of duties for the shift and then go on to do things that he thought needed doing‚ such as organizing the kitchen cookware.

Lloyd’s son-in-law‚ Keith Vinson‚ is Moulton’s Fire Chief. On the night that Lloyd died‚ the structure fire was under control. He walked up to Chief Vinson and said‚ ‘Let me squirt some water.’ Due to back problems‚ Captain McCulloch had not been on a hose for over 6 years. He usually manned the pump on the truck. His son-in-law gave him the hose‚ turned around to go back to his chief’s vehicle‚ and heard a loud crack. He turned and yelled‚ ‘Get back.’ He saw the wall come straight down on Lloyd and firefighter‚ Dusty Jones. Chief Vinson said it seemed that in the 1 or 2 seconds it took to die‚ Lloyd appeared to stiffen up as if he were going to try to hold up whatever hit him. He knew there was no time to run. He was a tough man with a great sense of humor. He was always telling jokes and making people smile. His family doesn’t know why he chose to get the hose from his son-in-law‚ or why it was only a few seconds from the time he took it until the wall fell. But‚ they do know that he will be with God throughout eternity. That’s the kind of life he lived.
