I met Luke long before I imagined he would become my husband. From the very beginning, he had a gentleness about him that was impossible to miss. He was kind in a quiet, steady way, the kind of man who didn’t need attention or praise to do the right thing.
Luke was a graduate of Northeast Dubois High School, Class of 2002. Luke went on to attend Oakland City University, where he earned his degree in automotive and mechanical studies. He had a natural talent for working with his hands and a mind that could fix almost anything.
Farming wasn’t just something Luke did; it was part of who he was. He found peace in the land, pride in honest labor, and joy in providing for his family. He also worked in the engines division at Jasper Engines and Transmissions, where his dedication and work ethic reflected the man he was.
Luke’s heart belonged to service. For 17 years, he served as a devoted member of the Celestine Volunteer Fire Department, answering calls without hesitation and putting others before himself every single time. He was also proud to be part of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, the Celestine Community Club, and St. Isidore Parish at Celestine Catholic Church. Serving his community wasn’t an obligation to Luke; it was an honor.
On May 25, 2022, I became his wife, and from that moment on I saw even more clearly the depth of his love and devotion. He was a patient father, a constant protector, and a steady source of love for Bryce, Hayden, and Lenore. No matter how tired he was, he always made time for them, always showed up, always loved with his whole heart.
Luke was the kind of man who would stop whatever he was doing to help someone else, often with a smile and never expecting anything in return. Friends, neighbors, coworkers, and fellow firefighters knew they could count on him. He was gentle, humble, and genuine, and he left an impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
On the evening of September 7, 2025, Luke tragically lost his life while responding to a structure fire in his personal vehicle. He died doing what he had always done, answering the call and putting his community before himself. Though our hearts are broken, we are forever proud of his courage and sacrifice.
Luke was and always will be deeply loved. He was the kindest and sweetest man, one whose presence made the world better simply by being in it. We lost a good one, but his legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the community he served so faithfully.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our hero #214
