Marcelo “Ox” Garcia III

Marcelo “Ox” Garcia III tragically lost his life in the line of duty on November 6, 2024. Born in Houston, Texas, on June 24, 1982, Marcelo’s love for his hometown and neighbors was evident throughout his life. Raised in the close-knit Magnolia Park neighborhood of Houston’s East End, he was deeply committed to giving back to the people and places he loved.

Marcelo attended De Zavala Elementary, Edison Middle School, Milby High School, and Texas Southern University, where he majored in business administration, demonstrating the same drive, determination, and passion that would later define his career as a firefighter.

From an early age, Marcelo excelled in athletics. He played football for the Magnolia Park Sharks and baseball at Milby High school and TSU, finding in sports the values of teamwork, discipline, and service. Over the years, he established the “Angels in the Outfield” annual kickball tournament, which brought hundreds of gifts to the children in the East End community. Recently, his vision included continuing to give back through a toy drive sponsored by golf, and we are proud to continue his legacy. Marcelo mentored younger athletes, volunteering with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School, Milby High School’s baseball team, and the Magnolia Park Sharks football.

Marcelo answered the call to serve in 2015. Known for his work ethic, infectious smile, and fierce dedication, he proudly served at Houston Fire Station 23, in the heart of the neighborhood where he grew up. For Marcelo, it wasn’t just a job — it was a calling. He loved the camaraderie, adrenaline, and the purpose it brought.

Outside of work, Marcelo cherished every moment with family and friends, often spending weekends around a barbecue grill, sipping iced mocha coffee and sharing stories. He always made time to visit and care for his elderly grandparents. He had a passion for classic cars, classic rock, and timeless movies, which he enjoyed watching again and again.

Marcelo always went out of his way to lend a helping hand, cutting a neighbor’s grass, picking up trash in the neighborhood, or simply being there for those around him. He always found ways to pay it forward, embodying the values of service and kindness he held dear. He leaves behind many beautiful memories that will forever be cherished. One of these was his 3:00 pm ritual at Houston Fire Station 23, where he would chant “LET’S GET IT” as a way to motivate his crew to work out.

Life will never be the same without him. He was the heart and soul of our family and is missed dearly by all his family and many friends.
