Lieutenant Mark J. Giannini was born on December 16, 1967. He dedicated 20 years of his life serving the people of Springfield, Massachusetts, a city he grew up in, working from the age of 15 as a busboy and cook. Not only did he serve and protect his city, but he served his country as well. At 24 years old, Mark enlisted with the U.S. Navy on April 30, 1991, attending the recruit academy in San Diego, California and eventually serving on the USS Kalamazoo AOR-6. Mark served his full enlistment and was honorably discharged as E-4 on May 10, 1993.
After the Navy, Mark went on to study law enforcement at Springfield Technical Community College. Fast forward to April 28, 1997, Mark was selected as a firefighter recruit for the City of Springfield. After nine years working on Engine Co. No. 9, Mark Giannini made his way up to lieutenant. During his career, Mark showed that he was not only capable of fighting fires but also capable of cooking with fire! In 1999, he and his wife started a catering business that lasted for 13 years and opened a restaurant called Friends, both of which served American, Italian, and Hispanic cuisine. Mark’s food always brought people together, whether it was his brothers in the firehouse or his family at home.
When Mark wasn’t cooking or running through burning buildings, he was either working part-time security at the Springfield Museums or helping his local baseball community. He coached all the way from Little League up to the high school level. From repairing dugouts to hosting the snack shack, Mark always found ways to support his team. In 2022, he was awarded the East Longmeadow Baseball Association Albert “Baba” Tranghese Commitment to Excellence Award for his dedication to the town’s baseball program.
With multiple smoke inhalation exposures on the job, Mark had no choice but to retire on May 8, 2017. Mark stopped battling fires and was now fighting for his life with cancer. Yet again, Mark turned to food during his retirement. He graduated from the MGM culinary school at HCC in 2019. He started a fit meal business from home during the height of Covid, allowing people to stay healthy during troubling times.
On October 20, 2022, Mark sadly passed away, leaving behind a loving family, his wife (Abby), his two sons (Kenny and Joseph), and his sister (Grace).
To this day, Mark’s impact on the community continues to show, as every year two students attending the MGM Culinary Institute at HCC are awarded the Mark Giannini ’19 Good Character Scholarship, which is awarded to those who show a passion for cooking like Mark.
