From the very beginning of Marques’s 32-year journey, which began September 4, 1991, he made sure that the victories he sought were not only for his enrichment, but for everyone within his sphere.
Born to Vickie and the late Allan B. Hudson, Marques grew into a superior athlete, excelling in various sports, but it was his baseball prowess that earned him a scholarship to Lincoln University in 2009. His love of the sport continued to grow, but it could not overtake the longing he had to return home and be present for his firstborn son, Kaleb, whose medical crises were ongoing. After two years at Lincoln, Marques resumed his duties as a hands-on dad and caregiver to his son. That decision was a prime example of the commitment Marques demonstrated throughout his life to family and friends alike.
Josiah, the second born of Marques’s three sons, is a mirror of his dad’s culinary ability and exuberance. A shared love of video games and cooking made their bond even stronger. Marques’s third son, Isaiah, an avid sports fan and athlete, also benefitted from his dad’s sports acumen when Marques volunteered for Isaiah’s T-ball team, the Oreos
Kessie (pronounced Kee-See), the nickname used by his closest family members, was always known as a man of service, a man of the people. No matter who you asked, the same descriptors were used repeatedly: calm, kind, loving, humble, dedicated, brave, and protective. Family and friends spoke often of the way Hudson nurtured his sons, lovingly addressing their collective and individual needs.
Hudson’s affinity to serve humankind made him a perfect fit for the City of Plainfield’s Fire Department, which would be his final career path. Despite the rigors of the job, Huddy, as he was called by his fellow firefighters, welcomed the sense of brotherhood born of his time at Station 4. Childhood friend and football teammate Kendall James, now a firefighter in New Brunswick, New Jersey, recalled, “He always wanted to be a firefighter. He showed us pictures when we were younger, of him at different fire stations throughout Piscataway township, where we grew up.”
While battling a house fire on January 26, 2024, Marques left this world as he lived in it, in the service of others.
The acts of love and kindness demonstrated by this beloved father, son, brother, and firefighter will forever reside in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.
