Matthew D. Shafer, 21, dedicated his life to serving others as a firefighter and EMT. Born with a spirit of compassion and courage, Matthew discovered his calling early, becoming a firefighter cadet at just 15 years old. From that moment, he poured himself into the work he loved, earning his Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Wildland Firefighter, HAZMAT and EMT certifications. He proudly served with the Lawson Fire and Rescue Protection District in Lawson, Missouri, and Madison Fire and Rescue Protection District in Madison County, Idaho, protecting communities with bravery and heart.
Matthew’s love for his family was the center of his life, especially his younger brother and sister, whom he cherished deeply. He found joy in the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or simply spending time in nature. In high school, he was a dedicated athlete, competing in baseball, soccer, cross country, and track. His determination and teamwork carried into every part of his life.
Faith was also an important part of who Matthew was. He served a mission for his church in central Mexico, where he shared his kindness, service, and love with others. His commitment to helping those in need was not just a career choice, but a reflection of the person he was.
Matthew’s legacy is one of service, love, and devotion—to his family, his faith, and his community. Though his life was tragically cut short, his impact will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the example he set. Matthew is missed dearly by his family, friends, and coworkers.
