Matthew D. Smith‚ 33‚ career firefighter‚ Redwood City Fire Department‚ died February 5‚ 2001‚ at the end of a physical fitness period while on duty.

A lifelong resident of San Jose‚ he was a skilled carpenter who had helped many of his fellow firefighters with their homes. He loved to spend time fishing and hunting with his son.
