On June 22, 2007, the FDNY lost one of its own, a beloved husband, father, friend, and hero, with the passing of Michael J. Shagi due to a 9/11-related illness. Michael’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and deep love for family and community.
Born on March 11, 1951, in Queens, New York, Michael grew up in a family rooted in loyalty, integrity, and hard work. He attended Springfield Gardens High School, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Kathleen.
After high school, Michael studied at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and went on to join the NYPD. With courage and commitment, he served the people of Brooklyn and Queens, always standing as a protector of his community.
Later, Michael transitioned to the FDNY, joining Engine Company 74 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where he found his true calling. He cherished the camaraderie, purpose, and opportunity to help others in their most critical moments. Known for his generous spirit, he was always eager to help, whether it was saving lives, assisting fellow firefighters with car repairs, or researching the best deals on appliances. His warmth, dependability, and devotion to the FDNY brotherhood made him unforgettable.
Michael was also a gifted cook, and his firehouse meals were legendary. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—food, laughter, and caring for others. His warm and contagious laugh could brighten any room.
He and Kathleen made their home in Nassau County, New York, where they raised three daughters, Christie, Tracie, and Nicole. Michael’s love and devotion for them was endless. Christie became a brand promoter, Tracie followed in his footsteps as an NYPD sergeant, and Nicole became a special education teacher.
Michael’s health declined following his heroic service during the rescue efforts at Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks. He retired in 2002, and the long-term effects of his injuries and illness ultimately led to his passing five years later.
Even in retirement, Michael remained the heart of his family—a devoted husband, loving father, loyal son and brother, and a cherished friend. He lived with modesty, strength, and an unwavering sense of duty.
Michael J. Shagi is missed by all who knew him. Though he is no longer here, his spirit lives on in the memories and love he shared. He was a hero in every sense of the word—not just because of the uniform he wore, but because of the heart and love he gave to everyone around him.
