Michael Jensen was born on July 22, 1979, in Yakima, Washington. He spent his early years in Yakima and then moved to Naches. After graduation, he pursued studies in fire science, earned his EMT certification, and joined the fire training academy at Yakima Fire Department.
His desire, connection to nature, and adrenaline-seeking attitude ignited an interest in wildland firefighting. He began his career with the Naches Ranger District. His first year in fire was 2001, a year marked by a tragic wildfire that claimed the lives of members of his unit. Although he wasn’t with his crew at the time, it had a huge impact on his life. Over the course of his 22-year career he assumed a wide range of roles and became a respected figure in the firefighting community. He traveled to numerous locations in the United States in his role at the U.S. Forest Service. He was involved in fire prevention, served as an engine captain and hotshot, and educated future firefighters. After an extended time on the Oregon coast with the Powers Ranger District, Michael arrived back at the Naches Ranger District, where his career started and ended.
Fire was a big part of his life, but his light never shined brighter than when he became a father. His children, Annelise, Aiden, and Haisley, were the highlight of his days. Fatherhood came naturally to him. He was a devoted dad whose unwavering patience, love, and stability in the face of any challenge made him not only an exceptional firefighter but an extraordinary father. Although he didn’t get to be a father for as long as he would have wished, his children were the most important part of his life, and his love will continue to watch over them forever.
Michael’s life was cut far too short after a sudden medical emergency. Though there were no final goodbyes, his love for life and the way he touched others will remain with us always. We are deeply blessed for the time we had with him and forever grateful that God entrusted him to our lives.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
