On March 3, 2025, the New Orleans Fire Department lost a beloved member to cardiac arrest while on duty, and we mourn the passing of District Chief Michael T. Windsay Sr.
Born on June 23, 1973, he was a graduate of Marion Abramson Senior High School in New Orleans.
Michael was a seasoned veteran of the fire service, dedicating over three decades to the community and a career he loved. His intelligence and life skills enabled him to serve his community as a firefighter, apparatus operator and captain before eventually ascending to the rank of district chief. Michael flourished in his role as district chief, most notably when it came to professionally nurturing and guiding those under his command.
His natural leadership qualities proved ideal in his dual role as an instructor at Delgado Community College Fire Training School. He mentored many of the young firefighters currently serving the NOFD.
Personally, Mike was a fun-loving individual who enjoyed joking and spending quality time with his family and friends. Whenever anyone needed help, Mike was always willing to go out of his way to assist.
He was also a lifetime member of the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research, which allowed him to be closer to his faith.
Michael is survived by his partner, two sons, a grandchild, a brother, a sister, and a host of adoring family members. He was an impactful servant leader to those around him and the people who respected him, and he is greatly missed.
