Mitchell T. Christian was born on February 6, 1963, to Jack and Gail Christian, who raised him to understand the true meaning of work, loyalty to family, and always being his best. In high school he excelled in football and won many awards, including Best Running Back, Best Defensive Back, and Mr. Football. He was inducted into Raceland’s Football Hall of Fame. This was where he developed his love for working out. Although he was a competitive man, he was embarrassed by awards and attention. He was quiet but very witty and funny. He was liked and respected by all who knew him.
He enjoyed cooking for his brothers and was featured in “Bridges” magazine for his chicken and dumplings. His men loved his strawberry rhubarb pie and still make it in his honor.
Mitch volunteered for most extracurricular training available throughout his career. He became a certified diver on the search and recovery team. He attended training in Emmitsburg and became a fire investigator for the department. He received an award from the city for Bravery in the Line of Duty. Mitch moved up the ranks during his 25 years from firefighter to battalion chief. His men loved working for him.
Mitch worked two jobs for 34 years. He was also a CMT for KDMC, using his training to work in the ER on his days off. He would go on his 12-hour shift as soon as he left the fire station for 15 years. He was always using his training to take care of someone. Later, he worked at Small Space Confinement Rescue with companies his firefighting brothers started. His work ethic and self-discipline were inspiring. No matter what, he always made time to work out. It was not just a hobby; working out and being fit was part of who Mitch was.
His wife and children adored and respected him with all their hearts. He was their world. Their time together was spent with humor and good food. He loved his grandchildren with his whole heart. He loved trivia and always knew the answers at Jeopardy. He was a natural winner and always won at games. He loved history and knew all about the Civil War and World Wars I and II.
Mitch was married to his wife for 38 years. He will always be her hero. He is missed terribly by his wife, children and grandchildren. He left a big hole in this world. His family, friends, and firefighting brothers will never forget him.
