Year Honored:

Neil R. Ferro

Neil was a beloved husband, father, papa, firefighter, and friend. He was born in Brooklyn on March 10, 1958, and raised in Queens, New York, where he laid the foundation of the life he went on to build, rooted in integrity, resilience, and love. After marrying the love of his life, Donna, they moved to Staten Island, where they raised three incredible children. Eventually, they found their little slice of paradise in Bay Head Shores in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a place that brought Neil peace, joy, and cherished memories.

From a young age, Neil knew he wanted to be a firefighter. He didn’t just love the job; he lived for it. From the camaraderie of the firehouse to the smell of smoke in his uniform, he embraced every moment. Following in the footsteps of his best friend and older brother, Paul, Neil embarked on a remarkable journey through the FDNY, serving with dedication and pride in Engine 246, Ladder 169, Squad 1, and Engine 227. He became a lieutenant and captain, ultimately serving as the commanding officer of “The Rock,” the FDNY’s training facility. If you asked Neil about the department, his eyes would light up with pride and passion.

Neil worked tirelessly, often holding down multiple jobs to give his family the beautiful life they deserved. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his children pursue careers that mirrored his values of service and compassion. Nicole became an oncology nurse; Christopher followed his father’s path to the FDNY, serving in Ladder 120 in Brooklyn; and Alexandra became a physician assistant. Neil beamed with pride at every milestone they reached.

Neil loved to travel the world, play golf, entertain, and cheer for his beloved New York Rangers. His greatest love was his family. His grandchildren, Jack, Ryan, Sloane, Dylan, Abigail, and Isla, were his world. He glowed when speaking about them, each story more animated than the last, each smile more genuine.

Neil left an impression, not just with his ever-present tan from simply stepping outside, but with the warmth, generosity, and spirit he brought into every room. He gave everything he had to those he loved and the communities he served. He had countless memorable quotes, many of which we can’t repeat in polite company, but one perfectly captured his approach to life: Every day is a gift, and every meal is Thanksgiving.

Neil lived with gratitude, joy, and purpose, giving us all a masterclass in how to love fiercely, serve faithfully, and live fully. He is missed beyond words, loved beyond measure, and remembered with deepest affection. Rest easy, Neil. Your legacy lives on in all of us.
