Nolberto Gem

Nolberto. Norby. Norb. Gambingo. These were his nicknames, and he loved all of them, but he was proudest to be called Fire Captain/Paramedic Gem. He served with dedication for 35 years in the Phoenix Fire Department. He loved what he did and was proud to tell his stories over the years. He had “Captain Gem” labeled everywhere, including on his license plate.

He was almost hired by Glendale Fire, but he said he only wanted to be a Phoenix firefighter. He never regretted making that decision. He studied and worked passionately towards becoming a paramedic, hazmat certified, and a captain. He dragged tires down the streets, climbed ropes, and ran stadiums.

He proposed to his wife in front of a fire station. They were married and brought two beautiful children into the world. Nolberto was a proud and dedicated father, husband, son, brother, friend, and firefighter. We all looked up to him and always felt safe in his care when he was around.

He served from his heart. He loved to make people laugh, and he shared all his corny jokes with anyone willing to listen. He dressed up as a clown for parties and events. He proudly volunteered with the Valley Hispanic Bomberos.

He spent many hours and days at his childhood home taking care of his elderly father, Trinidad Gem. “Trini” passed in March of 2021, and Nolberto continued to drive from Mesa to Phoenix to take care of his mother, Jesus Gem.

Shortly after retirement, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and went through chemotherapy for his occupational cancer. He was able to enjoy two wonderful years with his friends and family. We all wish that we could get more time with him. He is dearly missed by everyone. The memories we have with him last forever here on earth, and we can’t wait to be with him again in heaven.

We love you and miss you.
