Peter A. Chiodo

Peter A. Chiodo, retired NYC firefighter, left this world on November 26, 2022, surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long battle with WTC-related illnesses.

Born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, in 1957, Peter was the only son of four children born to Nancy and Stefano Chiodo. He is a graduate of FDR High School and Brooklyn College.

Peter moved to Staten Island and worked in the corporate sector for eleven years until 1989, when he made the decision to follow a dream he thought had passed him by. At 32 years old, he became a member of the FDNY. He always said it was the best decision he ever made.

Assigned to Engine 226 in downtown Brooklyn, one of the first questions he was asked was, “Can you cook?” He replied, “Sure, I can cook.” Little did they know that Pete loved to cook. And so, if he was working a night tour or a Sunday afternoon, he was probably cooking the meal. Peter spent his entire 25-year career at Engine 226 battling some of the biggest fires in New York City history, including the St. George Hotel fire and both World Trade Center attacks. He retired in 2014.

Peter and his wife raised two wonderful daughters together, one a dedicated nurse and one who followed in her dad’s footsteps and joined the FDNY. He was a dedicated parent, never missing a chance to support his girls. He was very active in Staten Island Interclub Swimming for the many years his daughters were competing. A real “girl dad,” he never missed any show or dance performance. Only brother to three sisters, father of two daughters, and devoted husband to his wife, Peter always considered himself a lucky man to be loved so deeply by all the women in his life.

Peter is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
