Philip Patrick “Phil” Christensen, born September 16, 1968, in Corona, California, was a man whose life was marked by love, adventure, and exceptional service. Growing up, Phil developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a passion for adventure. He enjoyed camping, boating, and photography and found joy in capturing the beauty of life’s moments. His love for off-roading in his Jeep added a thrill to his life and created lasting memories with his loved ones.
Phil’s greatest pride was his family. In 1988, he married Kim, with whom he shared 34 years of love and partnership. Together, they raised their children, Josh (Emily) Christensen and Jordan (Zachary) Hall, in Hackett, Arkansas, where they built a life full of cherished moments. Phil was a devoted father and a beloved “Papa” to his grandchildren, Rhett, Harper, and Beau.
Phil was often spotted down at his dock, rocking in his chair and watching the water. He also enjoyed spending time in his workshop crafting beautiful woodwork pieces. But his favorite pastime was playing on the floor with his grandchildren, watching them grow and develop.
Professionally, Phil left an indelible mark as a firefighter. His career was distinguished by bravery and leadership, earning him numerous accolades including Firefighter of the Year in 2000, Company Officer of the Year in 2012, and the IAFF President’s Plaque in 2013. As the most decorated firefighter in the history of the Fort Smith Fire Department, his achievements spoke to his unwavering commitment to his profession and the community he served. Phil also served as the IAFF President from 2007 to 2014 and was a proud member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Arkansas Association of Fire Chiefs. His role as the Citizen’s Fire Academy coordinator allowed him to share his extensive knowledge and inspire countless citizens.
Phil passed away on February 11, 2023, at the age of 54, after a courageous nine-month battle with brain cancer. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his legacy of love, service, and leadership will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
