Raymond E. Murphy‚ 46‚ lieutenant‚ FDNY‚ Ladder 16. Murphy‚ a former salesman‚ took a pay cut when he joined the FDNY‚ but he didn’t seem to mind. Firefighting‚ unlike sales‚ meant being able to save lives. As with everything else that Murphy did‚ he threw himself into firefighting with a passion. In his spare time‚ he dedicated himself to home improvement‚ using his carpentry skills to turn an old house into a dream home.
I never met you, but your have protected me my entire fire service career. As I watched the tragic events take place almost 15 years ago on September 11th I realized my calling was in fire and emergency services. Upon my completion on interior firefighter certification I was given two items; my Cairns Classic 1010 helmet, and a 9/11 memorial bracelet with your name on it. I have worn the bracelet everyday of my career. This year I am participating in the Silent Bridge walk in Charleston SC. I have made contact with fellow firefighters from Ladder 16 and have received an FDNY t-shirt to wear during the walk to represent you and the ultimate sacrifice you made on that day. I am 46 years old as I participate in this walk, the same age as you when your life was from us. I will always remember and never forget. Thank you…

– Virginia DavidsonOn this day, September 11, 2020, as I reflect on the events of 19 years ago, I know exactly where I was as a Police Officer. I’ll never forget! Even though I never got to meet you Lt. Murphy, I feel connected to you due to the fact that you knew members of my family in New York. I mourned your passing, but I know that you are with God in Heaven and now safe. I continue to pray for your family, and for them to heal since you’ve been gone. I’ve been told what a wonderful, dedicated firefighter you were in the FDNY. You have not been forgotten even by me, and I know your family will re-unite with you in heaven one day. Your service to the citizens of NYC are appreciated!
