Firefighter Richard Freeman, from the Palatine Fire Department was killed on February 23, 1973, while trying to extinguish a blaze at the Ben Franklin Variety Store in downtown Palatine, Illinois. He was one of three firefighters killed, along with Firefighter Warren Ahlgrim and Firefighter John Wilson.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
