Robert Evans Talbott was born on February 2, 1969, in South Boston, Virginia. He was the son of Glennwood Watkins Talbott and LuRay Trout Talbott. He was a graduate of Blue Stone High School, Class of 1988, and a graduate of Danville Community College, Class of 2011, where he received a degree in fire science.
He devoted 40 years of his life to serving others, starting in his teenage years as an Eagle Scout, volunteer firefighter, and volunteer at the Danville Life Saving crew, where he became a life member. He began his fire service career at the City of Danville Fire Department, where he served for eight years. He then joined Chesterfield Fire and EMS in Chesterfield, Virginia, where he became a 20-year veteran of the department. Robert’s commitment to service was unwavering during his tenure.
Robert was promoted to lieutenant in 2017. Throughout his career, Robert received numerous awards for his heroism and lifesaving work as both a firefighter and paramedic. He helped rescue five people from a burning apartment building in October of 2023. He was known for his kind, calm demeanor that helped bring order to chaos and made him well-suited to impart his experience and wisdom on young firefighters and paramedics.
He was a great leader and mentor to many. Most importantly, Robert was a family man. He was a devoted husband to his wife of almost 30 years, Carol, and proud father to his three children, Austin (wife Jill), Evan (wife Emily), and Amanda. He also leaves behind his grandson, Ashton; sister, Lynn; and his brother-in-law, Curtis (wife Scharlotte). He was predeceased by a brother, Gerry, and a grandson, Ryland. He was an avid motorcross rider and, over the years, traveled across the United States with his family to compete in races.
Robert’s strongest attribute was his character, which was comprised of compassion and a quiet confidence that he displayed daily. He had a humor that transcended his family life and the fire service. There are countless stories that still echo through the fire stations and his hometown of Robert’s antics and love for sweets.
On November 15, 2024, he was transported in the middle of his shift to the emergency department. He was diagnosed with occupational lung cancer and shortly thereafter succumbed to his illness after a brief but valiant fight against the disease. He was surrounded by his wife, family, and fire station crew at the time of his passing. Robert will forever be in our hearts and minds. He was a friend to many, a stranger to none, and we will never forget the impact that he had on our lives.
