Rocky S. Wood

Rocky Wood was a forest technician and wildland firefighter with the Virginia Department of Forestry, where he made many significant contributions to the community that he served. He was a resident of Dickenson County, Virginia, and was influential in the lives of so many friends, neighbors, coworkers, and all of those that he came in contact with.

Rocky was a 1987 graduate of Haysi High School, vice mayor of Haysi, chief of the Haysi Volunteer Fire Department, chairman of the Building Code Committee of Dickenson County, owner and operator of Wood Construction Company, and a member of the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church.

Rocky’s commitment to the fire service began at a very young age, joining the Department of Forestry’s local Keep Virginia Green (KVG) wildland firefighting crew at the age of 16. Rocky went on to serve as a part-time DOF firefighter for more than a decade before he became the local DOF forest technician for Dickenson and Buchanan County. Rocky was a member of the DOF Honor Guard, was a noted instructor in wildland fire investigation and suppression, and was best noted for his leadership and mentorship ability with the agency’s newest employees.

Rocky was cherished by his wife and family, a leader in his local community, and a special coworker to everyone in the DOF.
