Year Honored:

Roy A. Smith

Roy A. Smith, 60, of Center Point, Indiana, died April 5, 2025, after being involved in a single-vehicle accident while he was responding to a 911 call in Posey Township.

Roy was born on October 7, 1964, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Jack and Etta Kaye Smith. He graduated from Terre Haute South High School and attended Rose-Hulman and Indiana State University. He worked at Riley Chemical, Sony DADC, and briefly at Phoenix Closures, before retiring.

Roy loved his community and devoted himself to serving others. While his community expanded farther than Center Point, Roy served as a member of the Center Point Town Board for more than 20 years, as well as the town’s water department, cemetery association, and town marshal. He joined the Centerpoint Volunteer Fire Department in 1991 as a firefighter and later became the treasurer and assistant chief. He earned his EMT certification in 2015. Beyond his official titles, Roy quickly became the go-to for many townspeople to help with anything from medical assistance to electrical work. He was passionate about caring for others and truly believed his service was his purpose in life.

Roy was a dedicated first responder as an official member of Jackson Township and Posey Volunteer Fire Departments. Although Roy was not a member of every Clay County department, he responded to help calls anywhere, anytime, for his beloved ambulance Star Crews. In 2017, Roy extended his passion for others when he joined the Clay County Coroner’s Office, where he continued to serve as deputy coroner.

Beyond his community, Roy loved his wife and family more than anything. Roy married Annette in 1990, and they have two sons, Zephaniah (wife Haylie) and Cooper (wife Natalie). Roy loved his boys passionately and raised them to selflessly care for others, as they joined and serve with several volunteer fire departments like their father. Roy’s honorary son, Bram Sanders, came into his life in 2005, adding his wife, Katie, and children, Lane, Maelin, and Sylas.

Roy was a humble servant, frequently directing the spotlight on others. Although he would have appreciated the previously mentioned accolades, he would likely have told us, “Love one another. Give graciously. Lift up and support anyone that you are able. Love abundantly. Live fully. Give generously. Be kind. Be safe. Be humble.”
