Firefighter
Age: 56
Year of Death: 2018

Russell V. Fagan

Russ loved being a firefighter. After a lot of different jobs (including dressing up as Chuck E. Cheese and Santa Claus), he served in the Air National Guard for six years. During routine training, a fire was reported. When they called for volunteers, one of his fellow airmen pushed him out of the lineup, changing the course of his life forever.

His goal was to be an L.A. County firefighter, “because they’re the best!” He earned an A.A. degree in fire science and completed his EMT certification. He ran for miles up and down hills, pulled hose, and dragged giant tractor tires while carrying a 40-pound pack on his back. He volunteered in the emergency room and tested at different fire departments. After six years, he was hired by L.A. County.

Russ was passionate about being the best firefighter he could be and enjoyed the challenges of his profession. He was a firefighter 1 and 2, HAZMAT technician/specialist, HAZMAT assistant safety officer, and weapons of mass destruction certified. Russ was one of a handful who qualified to respond when L.A. County deployed their Type 1 HAZMAT Team out of the county.

Russ loved working at Battalion Division Headquarters, with a lot of moving parts and plenty to do. Intrinsically motivated, he would notice what needed to be done, gather other men, and handle it. A natural leader, he would come alongside new firefighters, instructing and guiding them. He wanted to share what he knew and see them succeed.

Through the Rescue Youth Program, Russell gave his heart to young men who needed encouragement, solutions, and support. He volunteered with Special Olympics and coached Little League football, baseball, and soccer. He served in his church, teaching kids, leading the men’s group, and leading the marriage group with his wife. With Firefighters for Christ, he helped train firefighters in other countries.

Russ was passionate about surfing. He sang loudly and didn’t mind if everyone could hear him. He danced and delighted in the freedom of being himself. He was known for his bear hugs. He shared his faith by telling everyone his story, especially at the gas station. He was full of life, love, and total joy. Bold, exciting, and hilariously goofy, he loved to make us laugh. He was generous, a great encourager and cheerleader, one of the bravest people I’ve known.

Deeply devoted to his family, he leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Jennifer; his amazing children, Seth and Hannah; and his beautiful grandchildren, Antonia, Elise, Jo’Art, and Romy. He was the best husband and father. We are better for knowing him, and we are forever changed.
