Shawn was the epitome of living authentically. He knew what mattered most and embodied loyalty and integrity. An eight-year veteran of the Cleveland Fire Department, he worked primarily on the city’s West Side, earning universal respect for his work ethic, instincts, strength, and sense of humor. He served Cleveland selflessly, showing determination and courage in numerous lifesaving incidents.
If you didn’t have the pleasure to meet Shawn, you missed a great opportunity to laugh, hear about Notre Dame football, his love for golf, the Cleveland Browns, and stories of his firehouse and family. He was an avid golfer and loved all things sports. His enthusiasm for the game was contagious, and he could often be found on the golf course perfecting his swing. He got to fulfill a lifelong dream of being a patron at The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, which was an experience he cherished deeply. Shawn’s passion for life and sports left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Shawn had a unique ability to care for those around him, making everyone feel special. His infectious personality made people complain less and laugh more. After his cancer diagnosis, he taught those around him what truly mattered in life, reminding everyone to appreciate the small moments. Instead of giving up, he fought with grace, dignity, and tenacity, embodying his motto, “If you see me in a fight with cancer, pray for the cancer.” Shawn and his wife, Kelly, pursued every treatment option, leaving no stone unturned. Their journey inspired others to remain hopeful and resilient despite life’s challenges.
Shawn personified the essence of a devoted family man. He was a loving husband to Kelly and a remarkable father to his two young children, Landon and Madeline. His family was the heart of his existence and the driving force and motivation for his relentless fight against his disease. To Landon and Madeline, their dad was a living, breathing superhero. Shawn imparted a profound life lesson to his children—when faced with adversity, rise up like a superhero and fight with all your might. Shawn was an extraordinary son, brother, uncle, cousin, coach, and friend, touching the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Shawn was cherished, leaving an unforgettable impact on every life he encountered. His absence is felt deeply; words cannot fully capture the extent to which he is missed. Cleveland feels a little quieter and significantly dimmer since his final call. Yet, his legacy will continue to shine through his wife, children, family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
