Stephen A. Wilson began his firefighting career in 1987 as a seasonal Firefighter I with CAL FIRE’s Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit. In 1990, he accepted an assignment as a limited-term fire apparatus engineer in the Tehama-Glenn Unit, continuing to grow in skill and leadership. In 2003, he advanced to Firefighter II in the Riverside Unit, and by 2006, he earned a permanent position as a fire apparatus engineer. In 2011, he returned to the Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, where he proudly served until his passing.
Stephen was known as a dedicated and reliable firefighter who loved his job. His professionalism, commitment, and steady presence set an example for those who served alongside him. He devoted his career to protecting California’s people, communities, and natural resources with honor and pride.
Away from duty, Stephen enjoyed rodeos, sports, and traveling. He especially loved time with his grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He is remembered as a devoted husband, colleague, and friend whose life touched many.
On April 6, 2014, Stephen Wilson died of a job-related heart attack at the age of 53. He is survived by his wife, Annette, and his beloved family. His service and sacrifice will always be honored and remembered.
