Stephen D. Whitson

Stephen Davis Whitson lived a life of service for others. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on September 24, 1965, to parents Hunter and Kathryn Whitson. Stephen graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1983 and later received a B.S. in Education at Old Dominion University. With Outward Bound, he worked with at-risk youth, living in the wilderness, camping, and teaching leadership skills. In 1986, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves as a military police officer for 18 years. As a sergeant, those he led looked up to him. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Germany and received numerous medals.

He continued to serve his community and worked 16 years as deputy sheriff for Henrico County Sheriff’s Department serving the courts. He moved on to join Henrico County Fire Department as a firefighter/EMT for another 17 years. As a certified diver, swift water boat operator, and successful completion in marine firefighting for the land-based firefighter, he served on the Search and Rescue Dive Team as well as the Burn Team until his passing on April 6, 2023. Among many certificates he earned to further his training and expertise, he received a unit citation award for a burning boat with citizens in the water. He loved his job and said many times that it was the best job ever. He exemplified leadership, professionalism, integrity, dedication, and enthusiasm in whatever capacity he took. He could be counted on and took his oath to heart.

So many words describe Steve as a person. He loved his family and always thought of others. He loved to shop and would come home with little things for his wife that he knew she would like. He loved his cats and spending time with them. He enjoyed amateur radio, woodworking, and chatting with friends. He knew a little something about everything and could have a conversation with anyone he talked to. He was there if you needed him or someone to just bend an ear with. He was quick to drop what he was doing to help others. Steve was a gentle, loving, giving, goofy, thoughtful husband (and cat dad) who is sorely missed beyond words.

He leaves behind a grieving wife, five cats, mom, and brother, as well as many close friends. It will never be the same without him. A day doesn’t go by without shedding tears, thinking of special memories. A hole was left in our hearts, but there’s comfort in knowing he is with our Father in Heaven and someday we will join him for all eternity with never a tear again.

God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes with no more death, sorrow, or crying. Revelation 21:4
