Steven K. Keffer

Steve Keffer dedicated his life to service, faith, and family. Born in Southern California, his childhood was filled with outdoor adventures, beach trips, and the values of hard work and resilience instilled by his parents. A natural athlete, he competed in football and track, but his greatest passion was exploring the outdoors, especially backpacking in California.

Inspired by his grandfather’s firefighting legacy, Steve found his true calling in 1992 when he joined the Albuquerque Fire Department. He served as a paramedic lieutenant on the rescue before retiring as a captain on the engine. He was known for his composure under pressure, leadership, and dedication to mentoring younger firefighters. His expertise saved countless lives, and his presence made every crew stronger. Though highly skilled, Steve was just as known for his firehouse pranks, infectious laughter, and ability to keep morale high. Always going for a run or workout between calls, he inspired others to push their limits and stay strong in both body and mind.

After retiring from AFD, Steve continued serving as a wildland firefighter and paramedic with Adventure Medics. His vast experience made him a valued leader in emergency medical response in remote conditions. He was always eager to train rookies, taking great pride in passing on his knowledge.

In August 2023, after 21 continuous days on the Gila Fire, Steve left to retrieve supplies for cold weather. Before he could return, he suffered a medical emergency in the line of duty. His passing was a devastating loss to his family, friends, and the firefighting community.

Steve met the love of his life, Lisa, while on duty with AFD, and their instant connection led to a life filled with adventure, love, and unwavering faith. Above all, his greatest purpose was being a good husband and father. He took immense pride in providing for and caring for his family. Together, they raised their four children—Maclaren, Finlay, Liam, and Kayde—instilling in them the same resilience and love of the outdoors, music, and travel that defined their family.

Steve lived for faith, family, and the fire service. His legacy lives on in his wife, children, and the countless lives he touched.

The Keffer family remains resilient, bound by love, faith, and strength as they navigate life without him. Though Steve is no longer physically present, his impact endures—forever remembered as a devoted husband, father, firefighter, paramedic, and servant leader.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
