  1. Tom was one of the happiest person on the plant. Always full of laughter and that smile. I was luck to be a friend. My last memory of Tom was the night before 9/11 he was excited that he be playing golf the next day with his best buddies. I was saying good bye and he picked me up like a rag doll and said I love you to pieces my friend, I responded right back at you. I will Never Forget

    – Marion

  4. My 11 year old daughter and I visited Ellis Island this weekend (April 2018) while in NYC for a soccer tournament. We spent time viewing the memorial to those killed on 9/11. My daughter Avery pointed out that there was a “McCann” on the wall, we took a picture of Thomas’ name and made note to learn who this victim was upon our return to home.
We have since learned that Thomas was a NYC firefighter and avid sports fan who passed along his love of athletics to his two children- so it is perhaps more fitting that my daughter and I decided to learn more about Thomas’s life while visiting NYC to attend a youth soccer tournament.
We have thought often of Mr. McCann’s heroism since our return to home and hope that his two children and loved ones are happy and healthy these 17 years after the attacks on WTC.
Please know that there is a family of strangers, also named McCann, in Boston who will remember and honor your Dad on 9/11 from this day forward.

    – Rich McCann/ Boston, MA
  5. Saturday, I climbed in the CNY Memorial Stair Climb with Thomas’s tag around my neck. This is the third year in a row that I have climbed for him and I plan to climb for him for many years to come. 110 flights of stairs to honor his ultimate sacrifice. It is a true honor to climb in his memory! Never Forget

    – Alyssa K./ Utica, NY
  6. For My friend Tom I have run the tunnel to towers race every year now for the past for years, I am looking to to honoring you and all of the lives lost on 9/11.

  7. We were privileged and honored to be able to call Tom and his family “neighbors”….. and friends. I think of him very, very often, with great sadness. I hope that his beautiful wife and wonderful children are doing well. To this day, I cannot hear a lawnmower start up without thinking of him and remembering what he ALWAYS said to me: “C’mon Mike. Take a break. Let’s have a beer and jump in the pool!” The world lost a very special person when we lost Tom.

    – Mike Tontini
  8. I took a picture of this gentleman’s name in September this past year. I placed a sketch of a flower, I drew, in the engraving of his name. I never thought of looking up his name until now. His name is still brought up until this day, and I’m so glad I finally looked up him up 🙂

  14. The USS Carney DDG64 (Destroyer), one of the finest ships in the entire US Navy has a memorial to Thomas McCann below decks, where virtually every member of the ship passes by it daily. I has his helmet, badge and picture on it. In 2005 a young sailor working extended shifts in the mess hall (18 hours a day) would look at that memorial and wish with his whole heart that he could be like that some day. Over four years this sailor was promoted out of the Mess Hall to Damage Controlman; Visit, Board, Search & Seizure Team; Work Center Supervisor; Surface Rescue Swimmer and other positions. This young man exited the Navy determined to achieve the goal that Thomas McCann inspired within him.

Today he has been a FireFighter/EMT for over ten years. He has never forgotten Thomas McCann, a great American who lost his life in service to all races, all religions, all cultures, all political affiliations of this country.

Thank you Mr. McCann, for inspiring my son to try so hard to overcome adversity, disappointments and challenges of life. But most of all thank you for enabling him to embrace what it means to be a citizen of the United States of America.

    – David Powers
  15. I did the Towers to Tunnels 5K in San Angelo, Tx. I randomly chose his card and walked for him.

    – Bobby Kelly
  16. I am 9 years old and I got Tom’s name from school to look up while doing our memorial 9-11 project. I am glad to know that Tom was a great man and served his state as a firefighter. I think he is brave and as an American that lost his life that day, I am sad. I was not even born yet when this happened but the video was horrific. Tom sure was brave to rush in to help others I am grateful for brave people that make our world a safer place. Thanks Thomas, You are remembered today.

    – Ayden Solares
