Roll of Honor

Wayne Doyle

Chief Wayne Doyle of the Lowndes County Volunteer Fire Department (Mississippi) holds the distinction of the longest-serving leader in District 3 history, contributing over 40 years to community safety until his passing on February 8, 2022. Born on April 11, 1959, in Columbus, Mississippi, to Kenneth and Shirley Hitt Doyle, Wayne initially pursued a career in homebuilding and pivoted to the field of fire protection in 1981 when he joined the Lowndes County District 3 Volunteer Fire Department.

Starting at Rural Hill Fire Station, Wayne rapidly ascended the ranks, becoming station captain in the late 1980s and subsequently assuming the role of assistant chief in 2000. As his leadership continued, Wayne’s impact on the department’s growth was substantial, overseeing the addition of new stations, the replacement of vehicles, and the expansion of facilities.

In 2012, Wayne Doyle earned the title of fire chief, leading the department through continuous improvement. His commitment transcended traditional firefighting, as reflected in his certifications in EMS and tactical training. Wayne played a pivotal role in establishing District 3 as the first fully trained search and rescue team in Lowndes County.

Beyond his professional commitment, Wayne dedicated his time to community service. He served as a firearms instructor, conducted tactical training, and held the position of safety team leader at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was survived by his wife, Janice; mother, Shirley; son, Kevin; and stepdaughters, Ivy (Justin) Harris and Amy (Robert) Moore. Wayne left an indelible mark on the Lowndes County District 3 Volunteer Fire Department.

In a poignant tribute to Wayne Doyle’s legacy, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors renamed the Rural Hill Fire Station to the Wayne Doyle Memorial Fire Station in February 2023. This renaming serves as a lasting testimony to his years of unwavering dedication to District 3 and the broader community. Chief Doyle’s legacy is characterized by his love for his firefighter family, a servant’s heart, and a passionate commitment to protecting others.
