Bill dropped a tanker load on me in Arkansas in 1980. We laughed about it over the phone the next morning while doing the fire report. He said he would buy me a cup of coffee sometime. In a strange twist of fate, I ended up on a nighttime fire on the Daniel Boone NF in 1985. I found parts of aluminum plane wreckage and later found out that was the sight where Bill had crashed and died in 1983. I drank a cup of coffee and thanked Bill for his service. He had a reputation for protecting firefighters on the ground.
