Senator Paul Sarbanes Scholarship

Scholarship Recipient

Miranda Brake

Major: Cognitive Science
Academic Scholarship Years:
Daughter of

Miranda is currently enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz studying Cognitive Science. Her goal is to complete her bachelor’s degree then continue her education in medical school as a pre-med student, eventually becoming a doctor.

Miranda believes medicine can best serve its communities through health education, reducing stigmatization of mental health resources, and making medical services more accessible and she wants to facilitate those changes. She has recently completed EMT school and is currently training for a volunteer position to work with connecting the elderly with resources such as rides and grocery delivery. To gain experience in her field, Miranda went with a volunteer group to Guatemala to provide aid in a medical clinic for a week and hopes to travel on a rural health internship to Bolivia this summer. Miranda’s stated goal is to graduate with minimal student debt and to give back to her family who has given her so much.

“Miranda is a determined, caring, and intelligent young lady who strives to do nothing less than her best,” says Firefighter Mike Carroll.

Miranda’s previous scholarship was made possible with support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
