Owen discusses how a scholarship would allow him to continue his education, which he currently cannot afford while reflecting how hiss past scholarship he received from the Foundation were crucial in helping him stay in college and progress toward his academic goals. His primary objective remains a career in engineering, where he can work hands-on and make a positive impact. He is focused on earning an A.S. in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Daytona State, while gaining experience with a company to develop his skills.
Owen also shares the personal challenges he has faced, particularly his role as a primary caregiver for his mother, who suffers from chronic Lyme disease. This responsibility has affected his academic journey, requiring him to leave UCF and return home to support his family. Owen has a history of community involvement, including serving on the greeting team at Journey Church, and hopes to resume volunteering when his circumstances allow. His goal is to continue his education and career development in engineering while balancing his family responsibilities.
Retired Firefighter Ryan Thompson describes Owen as a driven, focused, and incredibly intelligent young man. Adds educator Cara Copeland, “he isa hardworking and sweet natured young man. He helps his mother who struggles with chronic illness with anything she needs without hesitation while setting a fine example for his younger siblings.”
