Firefighter Leon L. Benton died from a heart attack after collapsing during a basketball game at Fire Station 1. Benton‚ who played on the department’s basketball team‚ was working overtime at the time training for a state basketball tournament for fire department teams.

On April 19‚ 1990‚ Fire Chief Kaye F. ‘Andy’ Anderson was transporting Chief Karl Drews back by plane after investigating the North end of the island for the best approach to installing drafting points to allow an for an improved ISO rating for that portion of the island as well as to test a draft point for GPM flow.

Shortly after take off‚ the plane’s engine sputtered‚ backfired and quit. The plane began to descend but after falling approximately 100 feet‚ the engine restarted and accelerated to full power although the plane did not recover from the descent and crashed into the water killing Chiefs Anderson and Drews.

Firefighter Mark Benge died in the line of duty while battling a multiple alarm fire at the Sunshine Gift Shop on Palm Parkway in South Orange County.

He was operating on scene when he sustained fatal injuries due to the truss roof construction collapsing.

Jeff was a volunteer firefighter with the Dover Turkey Creek Fire Department in Dover Florida. He was an engine driver.

While responding to an emergency call‚ his fire engine was struck on the driver side by a dump truck that ran a red light.

He is survived by his widow Gina.
