The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation joins the nation as we mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, President Carter was known for his commitment to humanitarian causes and commitment to global peace.
President Carter also had a tremendous impact on America’s fire service and how the federal government works to address the nation’s fire problem – a legacy that continues today. In 1979, President Carter signed an Executive Order creating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Later in that same year, he moved the National Fire Prevention and Control Administration (the predecessor to the United States Fire Administration) into FEMA. President Carter also dedicated the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland to serve as the home of USFA and the National Fire Academy.
President Carter’s dedication to disaster preparedness and response, as well as addressing the nation’s fire problem, has had a lasting influence on generations of firefighters and emergency response personnel. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation extends our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
