Senator Paul Sarbanes Scholarship

Scholarship Recipient

Lily Shaffrey

Major: Pre-med
Academic Scholarship Years:
Daughter of
Lily Shaffrey

Lily is a driven student with a clear goal of pursuing a career in forensic pathology. By applying for the NFFF Scholarship to ease the financial burden this will allow her to focus more intently on her studies, research, and volunteer work. She is also working on finding a healthy balance between academic and personal time, a skill she believes will be essential as she moves into the more rigorous phases of her education and career.

Her passion for forensic pathology stems from a fascination with how systems connect and function, particularly within a structured investigative process. Lily has been actively involved in forensic research, working on projects such as enhancing the effectiveness of ninhydrin for fingerprinting and studying how writing utensils appear on TLC plates. In addition to her research, she is a committed member of her school’s pre-health club, where she participates in community service efforts such as volunteering at animal shelters, supporting the Ronald McDonald House, and writing cards for hospitalized children. These experiences reflect her dedication to both scientific exploration and compassionate service, key qualities she will carry into her future as a medical examiner.

Fire Chief Mick Fischer cites, “Lily Shaffrey possesses a unique combination of academic excellence, strong leadership skills, and community involvement.” He adds, “Lily’s ability to listen, empathize, and inspire others will allow her to thrive and excel in her pursuit of a medical career.”

Lily’s previous scholarships were made possible with support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, Fire Engine Five Charitable Foundation, Global Health and Safety, and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
