Glenn J. Winuk served the Jericho Fire District as a volunteer firefighter‚ EMT‚ lieutenant and Fire Commissioner over the course of a 20-year career.

On September 11‚ 2001‚ Glenn‚ a partner at the law firm Holland & Knight LLP‚ raced from his nearby evacuated office to participate in the rescue effort at the World Trade Center. He died when the South Tower collapsed‚ medic bag by his side and protective gloves on his hands.

Throughout his career as a public safety officer‚ Glenn received numerous citations for his bravery‚ including for battling the Suffolk County Wildfires in 1995 and for emergency work at the scene of the Avianca plane crash in 1990‚ both on Long Island.

In October 2006‚ Glenn was inducted as a member of the FDNY Honor Legion for his valor on September 11‚ perhaps the first non-FDNY member to receive that elite recognition. The Firefighters Memorial Wall‚ a 56-foot-long bronze sculpture located at Engine 10 Ladder 10 across from Ground Zero in NYC‚ was dedicated in Glenn’s honor in June 2006.

Glenn is survived by his parents‚ Elaine and Seymour Winuk; his brothers‚ Jeff and Jay; his sisters-in-law‚ Dee and Carolyn; and his nephew and niece‚ Justin and Melanie.
