On January 7, 1912, a 5-alarm shoe store fire in Baltimore had been fought for over 2 days in bitterly frigid conditions. Captain August Schlimm, from Engine 3, contracted pneumonia and passed away on February 7, 1912. He was 45 years old and had faithfully served for over 24 years.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
