Christopher “Jonesy” Jones was born August 1, 1977, in Norfolk, Virginia. Chris was a longtime resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, until moving to Dinwiddie, Virginia, in 2021. He graduated from Indian River High School in 1996.
On November 22, 1998, Chris married the love of his life, Samantha. Together, they welcomed three amazing sons, Andrew (2000), Eli (2003), and Jacob (2004). Chris was a devoted father and husband. He loved his family immensely and loved making memories with them. Between his wife, three boys, and two beautiful granddaughters, Chris always had something to do with the family. He loved being a husband, father, father-in-law, and grandpa. He did everything in his power to provide for his family and ensure they had what they needed, right up to his final days.
Chris found his passion for firefighting in 2002 when he was hired by the City of Portsmouth and never looked back. Chris was affectionately known as a “fireman’s fireman” by his peers. He was a 20-year veteran of the department, having served in many roles and responsibilities. During his tenure, Chris served on Ladder 10, Squad 7, Engine 2, Engine 1, Ladder 1, Fire Marshal’s Office, Engine 4, Rescue 1, Engine 7, and Engine 10. Of all these assignments, Engine 7-B Shift became his home. Over the decades, Chris served on both the hazardous materials and technical rescue teams. Chris received numerous distinguished honors, including Company Officer of the Year, the Fire Department Service Award, the Campaign Award, the Commendation Award, the Life-Saving Award, and six Unit Citations. Chris was a shining example of selflessness in his service to the city and the department. He had a way about him that screamed, “I mean business,” but a heart that screamed, “Let’s have some fun!” He was a doer, never shying away or backing down from a challenge in the firehouse or on the fireground. In his off time, Chris was an avid outdoorsman. He never needed an excuse to be outside, and he loved hunting and fishing.
Beyond all else, Chris was a man on fire for God. At the time of his death, Chris was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, Virginia. He loved teaching Sunday School and Wednesday night Bible Study and enjoyed being a part of the men’s group. He wanted everyone to know what God had done for him and that he loved the Lord. When planning his service with his pastor, Chris wanted only one thing—to spread the Gospel and draw people closer to Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Chris is deeply missed by his loved ones and fire department family.
