Chuck Vodak‚ 45‚ a 10-year firefighter with the Dunning Volunteer Fire Department‚ died on March 16‚ 1999‚ of a heart attack while fighting a massive prairie fire in the Sand Hills. He was part of a group of firefighters credited with keeping the fire away from the town of Thedford. Nebraska’s governor ordered all flags lowered to half staff in honor of Vodak.
The National Emergency Training Center (NETC) campus will be closed during the government shutdown, including access to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
